GDM Design Thinkers

Students in Design Process class were given an assignment to create a poster design to promote a fictional event at the 2011 RGD Design Thinkers conference. Each student was assigned a different designer of historical significance. The challenge was to produce a design that promoted the event, was uniquely their own, yet was influenced and/or inspired by the signature work of their assigned designer. Entries were judged by a panel of experts at RGD Ontario and the winner was awarded free entrance to the 2011 Design Thinkers conference. The winner from this class was Irene Gurbein. However, the panel pointed out that they had a hard time deciding between her and the runner up Jody Kamen.

GDM students featured in Applied Arts

Representatives from Applied Arts magazine were in attendance at our recent graduate show. They were so impressed by the work of some of our students that they decided to feature a couple of them in The Wire. Click here to read the feature.

Graphic Design-Media fun stuff

Although all of the students in the program work very hard, they  still find time to have some fun. Below is an image of Deo Buen, John Dumrique, Ryna Gallardo, and Meng Xu.  On April Fools day, they showed up in class sporting these highly customized CMYK T-Shirts.

And if that’s not enough; below is an image of Creative Suite cupcakes baked by recent graduates Luuk Van Baars and Hannah Hall. These were the most popular item on the food table at the Works graduate show.

We certainly don’t want to give you the impression that our hard-working students aren’t rewarded. Below is a shot of Krissy Kudoba and Irene Gurbein at the Art and Design show. They are both showing off their ‘Past the Point of Pain’ awards they won for consistently pushing themselves to exceed the criteria of each assignment.

During the critique sessions, all opinions are welcome.

And why simply write your name on the board, when you can write your name on the board accompanied by a self portrait?

Please note that Deo Buen created this less-than-flattering portrait of instructor Derek Lea, who is apparently wanted for crimes against typography. To the right of that is Irene’s unfinished drawing of the stereotypical design student.

And finally, here is Irene acting serious and professional while holding down the fort at the Applied Arts Creative Schools Expo.

WORKS IN-PROGRESS: A selection of student work from the Graphic Design-Media program

poster design by GDM student Jaime Muñoz

The first and second year students in the Graphic Design-Media program would like to invite you to stop by the Corridor Gallery and see some of their finest achievements to date.

Historically, the showcasing of student work is reserved for graduation or the end of the academic year. In addition to the traditional model, it is very important to consider the methods of communication in which we all participate on a daily basis, and leverage this as a vehicle to showcase development.

In today’s world, the expectation is for information to be available to us instantaneously. As a culture, we have come to expect ongoing and constant feedback. This ideology is highly relevant in the constantly evolving world of design. As a result, the Graphic Design-Media program has devised this mid-stream showcase to give you a glimpse of where our students are at professionally at this moment in time. The purpose of this show is to allow you to examine their development, rather than simply saving the best for last. We think you’ll agree that the results are quite compelling.

Seventh Generation Package Design

In this project students explored the world of the niche national brand. Seventh Generation is the leading U.S. marketer of safe and environmentally friendly household products. Students learned to analyze design in terms of appropriateness for the existing brand equity, and the differentiation from the competition. The goal was to reflect Seventh Generation’s market leadership position and long-standing brand equity in the “Green Product” category in North America. The requirement was to create a powerful visual, national brand presence. The exceptional examples below show how individual students redesigned the logo for a more memorable and ownable identity, and achieved a stronger emotional connection with the consumer via packaging.

Applied Arts at the CCC

We are pleased to announce that our industry partners, Applied Arts magazine, were at the Centre for Creative Communications recently to judge the record number of entries for the 2010 Design and Printing awards. It was terrific to see all of the work spread out in our expansive studios and all of the judges meticulously going through each piece in detail over the course of two days.
